YWCA supports Planned Parenthood

When you donate money to your favorite charity, you might be supporting the killing of innocent human life. Seemingly innocuous groups such as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or the March of Dimes Foundation have furtive ties to the well-known abortion manufacturer Planned Parenthood. The latest group added to the list is the Young Women's Christian Association, better known as the YWCA.

Founded in the United Kingdom in 1855 as a group for Christian women, today the YWCA is the second largest women's group worldwide.

The international YWCA organization does not explicitly support Planned Parenthood, though many of its chapters have partnerships with them, such as the YWCA in Lorain, Ohio. Although there is no published list of all the YWCA chapters that support Planned Parenthood, I would suggest doing a little digging on your own (calling your local branch, visiting its website, etc.) before becoming involved. The YWCA is, however, officially anti-Life.

In fact, the current CEO of the YWCA, Dr. Lorraine Cole, claims that the group has always been pro-choice, even though it was not until the 1967 YWCA National Convention that the group officially began to support a women's “right to choose”. In addition to being anti-Life, the YWCA has launched a vigorous campaign to remove the Stupak-Pitts amendment from the current healthcare bill (visit www.ywca.org for more information); the group is far from neutral. The YWCA markets itself as a group that helps women. Yet many studies have shown that women who undergo an abortion are more likely to commit suicide, abuse drugs, and/or become depressed, and that abortion can increase the risk of breast cancer and infertility. It is time for us as Christians to question the organizations that supposedly represent us.

The next time you are going to make a charitable organization, do some research first. Groups such as Life Decisions International publish boycott lists that you can download to see which organizations are truly Pro-Life. As Christians, we are called to be the “light of the world” (Matthew 5:14); let us illuminate our consciences.
