Texas Senate Passes First Pro-Life Bill of 86th Legislature, Moves to Stop Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Industry

AUSTIN — On Tuesday, the Texas State Senate passed Senate Bill 22 by Senator Donna Campbell, M.D., (R-New Braunfels), the first Pro-Life bill to pass in either chamber thus far in the Regular Session of the 86th Texas Legislature.  SB 22 codifies the prohibition on state funds flowing to abortion providers and their affiliates. SB 22 would also stop cities and counties from using local tax dollars to benefit the abortion industry, including through contracts and lobbying on behalf of abortion providers.  SB 22 was the first Pro-Life bill to be heard in and voted out of committee, and we applaud Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick for prioritizing this important measure with a low bill number. His leadership paved the way for Senator Campbell to take the first steps to pass a substantive Pro-Life bill this session that will safeguard women and children from abortion.
