Texas Congressman reminds Pro-Lifers to stay vigilant over COVID-19 funding

As our country continues to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pro-Life movement must stay on high alert. As Congress simultaneously deliberates on how to help unemployed Americans who have lost their health insurance coverage and how much more taxpayer money to allocate towards relief efforts, anti-Life forces are trying to sneak dangerous amendments into these omnibus bills.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is once again scheming over how to include funding for abortions and the abortion industry in the next COVID-19 relief package going through Congress. Pelosi has already attempted this stunt twice before in the pandemic. She initially attempted to exclude certain funding from the Pro-Life Hyde Amendment’s purview. The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for most elective abortions and has been routinely included in legislation governing the use of federal funds. In legislation providing relief to small businesses suffering under the pandemic’s forced shutdowns, Pelosi tried to funnel some of this funding to abortion giant Planned Parenthood. Thankfully, President Trump and the Senate have thus far prevented these attempts to pay for abortion and prop up the abortion industry with taxpayer dollars.

Pelosi’s current attempt to strip Hyde Amendment protections and send federal funding to subsidize abortions and Planned Parenthood is only the most recent example of anti-Life efforts to sneak pro-abortion provisions into these massive omnibus bills. However, while Pelosi and anti-Life legislators attempt to remove historic Pro-Life protections from federal funding, Texas Congressman Mike Conaway (R-TX-11) is proactively working to ensure our most vulnerable Americans are protected, including both preborn children and those sick with COVID-19.

Congressman Conaway has filed H.R.6742, the “Protecting Life in Crisis Act.” This Pro-Life bill is cosponsored by over 150 members of Congress, including several of his fellow Texas colleagues (see list below), and would secure Hyde Amendment protections for any funding directed toward COVID-19 health care efforts, both domestically and internationally. As rising unemployment also leads to a rising number of Americans in need of health insurance, this bill would additionally prevent any federal money from being used to subsidize abortion in government health care plans.

We can care for those suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic without removing essential protections for preborn babies. The Protecting Life in Crisis Act illustrates this, affirming the crisis and needs currently facing our country without neglecting the foundational value of the Right to Life of every American. During this unprecedented time, when Congress votes on mammoth federal funding bills to combat a pandemic and economic devastation, the Pro-Life movement must remain on heightened alert to defend and advance the Culture of Life.
