Pro-Lifers demand transparency and create solutions in the face of Obamacare abortion coverage

Pro-Life Representative Chris Smith (R- NJ) wrote an op-ed for the Washington Times earlier this month in which he clearly outlines how the Americans are being kept in the dark about abortion coverage in the healthcare plans for which they are forced to pay. Despite a federal law called the Hyde Amendment which prohibits the tax-funding of abortion in most federal funding programs, Rep. Smith explains that many insurance plans that are part of Obamacare’s Healthcare Marketplace (accessed via healthcare.gov) fund abortions. But the plans don’t just cover abortion. They also hide that fact from potential (and actual) enrollees.

So severe was this deception that a watchdog group, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), investigated whether Obamacare plans include abortion coverage. The results were shocking. GAO research found that over a thousand insurance plans throughout the US cover abortion on-demand through an abortion surcharge, and adding insult to injury, enrollees do not know that they are paying this surcharge as part of their fees.

Placing blame squarely where it belongs, Rep. Smith quoted an Obamacare architect who worked with Obama and the Administration to craft a plan that, despite being blatantly illegal, would pass in the Legislature. Americans were recently apprised of the fact that the architect in question, Jonathan Gruber, stated the following:

Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter, or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical for the thing to pass.

Well, Mr. Gruber, the so-called “stupid” American people are smart enough to know when the wool has been pulled over their eyes.

In response to the Obama Administration’s nose-snubbing (which continues to this day), the Family Research Council and the Charlotte Lozier Institute teamed up to create a new website that provides crucial information about abortion coverage in Obamacare to families who are seeking enrollment. Because healthcare.gov nor the representatives who enroll citizens over the phone will provide virtually no information about the insurance plans except for what they cost, the site, ObamacareAbortion.com, is a critical piece of the healthcare puzzle right now.

Visit the website here to find out which insurance plans do NOT cover abortion in Texas.

Rep. Smith doesn’t mince words when it comes to the reality of taxpayer-sponsored abortion coverage. He said:

Abortion methods rip, tear, and dismember or chemically poison the fragile bodies of unborn children. There is nothing benign, compassionate, or just about an act that utterly destroys a baby and often physically, psychologically, or emotionally harms the mother.

Texas Right to Life applauds Rep. Smith for his stalwart defense of Life and his efforts to cultivate transparency via his new bill, the No Taxpayers Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act. Also, Texas Right to Life will continue to lead the way in the Texas State Legislature to pass strong Pro-Life taxpayer protections and transparency of the insurance coverage for abortion in Obamacare.
