Planned Parenthood´s New Abortion Mandate

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America has confirmed a new mandate to be adopted by all PPFA affiliates.  Labeled a “new patient services initiative” that standardizes every one of its agencies, it would require all affiliates to offer abortion services by 2013.  The news of the mandate comes after PPFA released its annual report showing that it obtained $363 million in grants and funds from federal, state, and local governments, and made more than $1 billion in profit.  It has also increased its share of the national abortion business to more than 26 percent.

After issuing the mandate, Corpus Christi-based Planned Parenthood of South Texas resigned is affiliate status with PPFA because it refused to comply with the mandate.  The chapter of clinics in the former Planned Parenthood of South Texas has changed its name to Family Planning of the Coastal Bend and will not offer abortion services in any of its facilities.  CEO Amanda Stukenberg of Coastal Bend said in an interview with Corpus Christi’s Caller-Times that she and her board of directors are confident that they can survive financially despite leaving the billion dollar industry.

The mandate states that all 95 affiliates or regions of Planned Parenthood run an abortion center by 2013.  This would ensure that all 865 Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the United States either perform abortions (surgical or medical) or offer abortion referrals to a center that performs abortions within the affiliate.  The mandate would also call for more emphasis to be placed on other PPFA non-abortion services as a means to attract more customers and to paint Planned Parenthood as something other than the abortion business it is.

Lisa David, senior vice president of Health Services Support for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America told the DailyCaller.com that during the next two years, the “new patient services initiative” would offer a range from “well-woman exams to lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, more patients will now have access to the full range of Planned Parenthood services.” These cancer screenings would align the PPFA with the Komen for the Cure Foundation which donated $730,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2009.

She told the DailyCaller.com that, “to meet the needs of our patients, Planned Parenthood affiliates will now offer a unified set of core preventive services.” David also stated that every Planned Parenthood center will be required to offer “the full range of birth control method options, such as the IUD.”

Despite the efforts to publicize the non-abortion related services within the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, it is clear that the driving force behind the business is abortion and the funds received from the government for performing them.  From its own figures in 2007, prenatal and adoption services amounted to approximately 5 percent of Planned Parenthood’s business, while abortions made up the other 95 percent.  Abortion must be the most lucrative item on Planned Parenthood’s agenda, hence the mandate forcing all affiliates to perform abortions or refer for abortion.
