As Planned Parenthood turns back on women´s health, their "mammosham" persists

At the Congressional hearing addressing Planned Parenthood funding late last month, Planned Parenthood president, Cecile Richards, made some curious comments about her organization’s provision of mammograms… or lack thereof.  Several years ago, Richards fear-mongered on national television, stating that defunding Planned Parenthood would lead to a crisis in women’s health, specifically pointing to a loss of mammograms.  But Planned Parenthood does not and never has provided mammograms.  And for good reason: there is no profit to be made in providing that level of women’s health, whereas abortion is highly profitable and increasingly common at Planned Parenthood.

In the wake of Richards’ admission that Planned Parenthood does not do mammograms (and the lie that “we’ve never stated that we did”), Live Action released the following video highlighting just how convoluted the mammogram conversation re: Planned Parenthood has become.

Planned Parenthood could have prevented a lot of bad press over not providing mammograms by offering them.  So why don’t they?  Simply put: there is no money to be made in providing women with mammograms at Planned Parenthood.

Financial analyst Keith Riler breaks down the cost of providing mammograms and contrasts that with the margins to be made on the backs of aborted children.  The financial winner is clear: abortion will trump mammograms for profit-obsessed Planned Parenthood every time.  Explains Riler:

The answer may lie in what economists call the “contribution margin.”  The contribution margin of each procedure is the marginal profit per unit of sale and thus the amount each procedure contributes to the coverage of fixed costs (such as executive compensation) and to profits.

The problem for Planned Parenthood – which thinks and acts much more like a business than most people realize—is that mammograms are much less profitable than the relatively lucrative procedure of abortion.

During the Congressional hearing last week, Cecile Richards admitted that no Planned Parenthood “to her knowledge” has a mammogram machine.  She repeatedly excused PP for not providing mammograms by saying that they are like any other screening center, which will refer out for them once a manual exam indicates a mammogram is necessary.  However, in 2011, Richards stated on The Joy Behar Show that millions of women would lose access to basic healthcare services, including mammograms, if Planned Parenthood were defunded.

Richards later tells Rep. Mia Love: “We do not have mammogram machines, and have never stated that we did.”  Richards even attempts to repeat the lie that Planned Parenthood never stated that they provided mammograms to Rep. Diane Black.  Repeated mammogram debacles at Planned Parenthood reveal the organization’s enduring commitment to one thing: profit.  Where there is no profit, there is no Planned Parenthood.
