Pro-Life Works: Abortion-Breast Cancer Link January 15, 2010
Additional Study Proves Abortion-Breast Cancer Link In her April 2009 study researcher Jessica Dolle of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA was examining whether there was a link between oral contraceptives and triple negative breast cancer. In the study senior investigator Louise Brinton of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute, who led a similar 2003 study and then falsely denied the abortion/breast cancer link, admitted that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer by 40%. Dolle’s study also shows that women who use oral contraceptives before the age of 19 multiply their risk of triple negative breast cancer 3.7 times. Women who have been using oral contraceptives for at least five years multiply their risk 4.7 times. Triple negative breast cancer is an aggressive form of cancer that is resilient to receptor targeted treatments, and as such, has a high mortality rate. Karen Malec, the president of the Coalition on Abortion/ Breast Cancer in Illinois stated that even though the 2009 study proves the link, “the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and other cancer fundraising businesses have made no efforts to reduce breast cancer rates by issuing nation-wide warnings to women”. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force is an independent panel of experts who examine studies to improve clinical preventative services. Now that they have this new information on the link between abortion and cancer it is their responsibility to announce this finding to the public. Their actions are just the opposite of preventative. It is quite possible that other groups like Susan G. Komen for the Cure that are linked to abortion are avoiding the topic due to their funding. They can fight for women’s lives but when it comes to hindering funds or “choice” it’s ok to sweep the facts under the rug. Chris Donatto Senior Intern |
