"Generation Now" Reaches Student Mothers

College campuses are an important battlefield of the Pro-Life movement.  While many students are away at college studying and making friends, values can come into question.  The prevalent view among college students is that college is the time for unrestricted fun and partying.  College, they say, is a time to rebel and to get away from parents.  What was just meant as a night of fun, however, can lead to an unplanned pregnancy and a scared young woman left alone and abandoned in an abortion mill, not knowing what to do.

Studies tell us that sadly, this is often the case.  According to the Guttmacher Institute, over half of women who have abortions are of college age.  The majority are not married, have only some college education, and barely have enough money to survive.  Many do not know if their families would support them if they chose to have the child, and they often think their friends or colleagues just would not understand.  Abortion seems to be the only option to these young women.

Such dire circumstances necessitate the Pro-Life message be spread among college campuses.  For this very reason, Texas Right to Life has expanded its presence at college campuses across the state in recent years.  The Generation Now Scholarship program was created in 2007 as a way to encourage more college students to become involved in the Pro-Life movement.

Texas Right to Life believes that college students especially need to hear that Life matters and that, in God’s eyes, there are no “unwanted children” and that every child was made by God for a reason, and it is not up to us as humans to take that Life away.  Psalm 139:13 reminds us: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.

Helping young women choose Life is a struggle, but many of our young scholars are already paving the way.  Emily Kebodeaux, a Generation Now Scholar at Stephen F. Austin University, has already created a scholarship program for young moms to finish their college education.  Through efforts such as these, we can choose to give women hope and defend Life.
