Pro-Life Works: Changes for Rock for Life June 7, 2010 Changes for Rock for Life Doug McGee Membership Services Associate
One of the more popular Pro-Life youth ministries in the country is Rock for Life. It features a vast network of Christian bands, musicians and artists. Rock for Life strives to teach Pro-Life values to young adults through music, education, and activism. The organization has a rich history, and there are several recent changes that will take Rock for Life in new directions. Rock for life was originally set to be a one-time concert in California in 1993. Its goal was to raise funds for a local pregnancy resource center and to call attention to the horrors of abortion. This event was much more successful than was anticipated. After a story about the event on MTV and continued publicity through local media, Rock for Life scheduled several more events and joined the Lollapalooza tour in 1994. As Rock for Life grew, the American Life League became its supporting organization and would help coordinate concerts and events across the country. Last month Rock for Life ended its eleven year relationship with American Life League. Rock for Life plans to start over on its own in California. While details for the reason of the split have not been made public, it appears to be amicable. Erik Whittington, the executive director of Rock for Life, told LifeNews, “We are excited about the next phase in our ministry. Our work will not be, and has not been suspended. We have many things planned and look forward to announcing them throughout the summer.” One of the most important changes that fans need to be aware of is the new web address http://TheRockForLife.com.The website offers Rock for Life’s philosophy and organizational structure, current Pro-Life news, ways for youth to become involved in the Pro-Life movement, lists of bands that support the Pro-Life movement as well as those that support abortion, and details of current and upcoming events. The Pro-Life movement needs to recruit future leaders from today’s youth to remain viable in the next generation. Rock for Life attempts to bridge the age gap in the Pro-Life movement through contemporary Christian rock that will inspire the next generation.
