What Others Are Saying

The Good | The Bad | The Ugly

“Abortion IS legal and people have abortions every day, especially in Texas.  You are not stopping this.  When I taught at a right wing university in Texas several of my students became pregnant and had abortions.  One did not even tell her parents because she was involved in purity rallies and did not want them to know that she had lost her virginity.  The girls also had no means of supporting themselves and their children.  I have since moved to England and a student of mine was faced with an unplanned pregnancy.  She felt free to confide in her parents because they were not fundamentalist Christians with unrealistic expectations about her virginity status.  Moreover, she was confident that her child would have its needs met because the British government is quite reasonable and helpful to women who choose to become single parents.  They receive support and free medical care and do not have to re-enter the work force until their youngest child is thirteen.  British people are happy to treat each other decently and in return the unwanted children of single mothers grow up with a parent around to guide them.  So they do not grow up to become murderers.  That is why the per capita murder rate in the UK is a tiny fraction of the murder rate in the US.  Christian conservatives cause abortions of unborn children and the high murder rate of the United States.  Stop praying and blowing up doctors and go baby-sit for some single mothers.”

“Would you please explain to me who thought up the idea that a fetus is a living human being?  Just the thought seems a little moronic to me.  When he/she draws the first breath, then it is a living human being.  Not before.”

“We have decided not to make a contribution, after careful consideration.  While I do support the 2 bills signed into law, I also support a woman’s right to choose, especially in cases of rape, incest, and the danger to the mother.  I am offended that you would lump those of us in that category together as “pro-abortion”.  I am not, nor do I know anyone who is in favor of (“pro”) abortion, and I feel comments like those are inflammatory and actually alienate would-be supporters.  I support increased education, as well as the teachings of abstinence as the only 100% effective birth control.  However, I also support teaching the use of condoms.  Abortion should not be taught as a means of birth control, but I feel that your group would outlaw all abortions if it had the ability and that I cannot support.  I would ask you and all members of your organization – how many unwanted children have you adopted or supported?  I would guess, but I may be wrong.  How hypocritical to want to prevent abortion, but then to not provide support to these children.”

“You know, it seems from my Christian perspective that honesty is the best policy, and that is what God will bless.  Your deceitful, dishonest “deep thoughts” should make you ashamed.  You will never, never succeed, even if you do in the short run, with lies, slanders, and name-calling.  God just does not condone that, and you are doing Him, who is at the core of my being, a huge disservice by using those tactics in His name.  That drives people away from Christ; it doesn’t bring people to Him – which is our ultimate charge for life.” Signed by someone “who wants a cure sooner rather than later for her two young adults with diabetes”

“Pursuant to the abortion issue, the majority of abortions are performed on poor young women who understand that they cannot provide a home or a proper upbringing for a child.  If abortion is to be made illegal, you will make it your business to see to it that Congress appropriates funds to these young mothers until the child is eighteen years of age or the mother secures employment to fund the following: 1.  Proper and adequate housing.  2.  Adequate medical care.  3.  Clothing.  4.  Proper educational needs.  5.  An adequate and healthful diet.  6.  A program which will enable the mother to secure gainful employment, health care, and day care.  If you do not appropriate funds for this program, you are condemning a child to poverty, inhumane treatment and most probably, prison or death.  The results of indifference to human life and abortion are one in the same.”

“While I am conservative in my beliefs, much of the material that the extreme right tends to distribute regarding stem cell research and cloning is absolutely false and misleading.  While I am all for the expression of one’s point of view, expressing a point of view with false, misleading or defamatory remarks isn’t worthy of consideration.  Stem cell research, while controversial, isn’t remotely related to cloning.  I hold degrees in both microbiology and molecular genetics, and your clumping of these two issues is extremely misleading.  Stem cell research in itself, has many facets that offer tremendous potential for benefit in medical research into the future, without even remotely touching the area of “embryonic” stem cell research.  You may or may not be familiar with somatic or adult stem cell research which has tremendous potential for advancement, yet defamatory comments made by your organization and other extremist groups seems to lump all stem cell research together.  This is wrong, and I believe that you know it.  So why not be more specific in your opposition to human embryonic stem cell research instead of the gross generalistic attack on all kinds of stem cell research and then trying to loosely attach this to “human cloning”.  This isn’t even responsible, it’s downright lying.  Please take more time to get your facts straight in the future."
