Is your representative sexist?

Pro-Life Representatives from Texas made a big showing in Washington yesterday when voting in favor of a bill that would ban sex-selective abortions – abortions committed because the unborn child is an undesired sex, generally female – yet the bill was ultimately rejected, failing to meet the two-thirds majority vote required to pass.

75 percent of Texas’ delegates in the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act, which would have prosecuted individuals who knowingly commit or coerce a sex-selective abortion. Doctors, for example, would have faced five years in prison for knowingly carrying out this sexist practice.

House Democrats overwhelmingly characterized the bill as insincere, and a sneaky way of limiting a woman’s “right to choose.”

President Obama, too, falsely portrayed the bill, saying, “The Administration opposes gender discrimination in all forms, but the end result of this legislation would be to subject doctors to criminal prosecution if they fail to determine the motivations behind a very personal and private decision. The government should not intrude in medical decisions or private family matters in this way.”

Texas Congressional delegates, however, faithfully represented Texas’ Pro-Life convictions.

 

Texas Congressman Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land 22nd) told Texas Right to Life, “I am deeply shocked and disappointed that this legislation did not pass in the House this afternoon.”

“While a large majority voted for the proposed bill, it is unfortunate and sad that it still fell short of the votes needed to pass. Partisan politics should never jeopardize the fate of human lives. Protecting innocent human life is a sacred responsibility and I will continue to do all that I can to protect the unborn,” said Olson.

 

Congressman Kenny Marchant (R-Fort Worth 24th) also voiced his concerns about sex-selective abortions and his vote to ban them: “I was proud to take a stand for life and against the intentional abortion of unborn baby girls by giving my strong support to the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA). I have always believed that every unborn child has a right to life and have been particularly troubled by the outrageous, discriminatory practice of sex-selective abortions."
