Pro-Life Works: Major Pro-Life Victory April 15, 2010 Major Pro-Life Victory in Nebraska Eric Brown Membership services Associate The Nebraska Legislature, by a vote of 44-5, passed landmark legislation setting a demarcation line on abortion services based on medical research proving that unborn children feel pain at 20 weeks. The Pro-Life Governor of Nebraska is expected to sign the legislation into law and it will take effect in October 2010. Once in effect, the Pro-Life law – prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks gestation except to save the life of the mother – will be the first of its kind in the United States. Abortion advocates are expected to challenge the law as unconstitutional in court. Although there are no judicial precedents for the soon-to-be Nebraska law, there is good reason to believe that at least the U.S. Supreme Court (if the legal challenges make it that far), which upheld the partial-birth abortion ban, would seriously consider a persuasive state interest in preserving unborn human life when substantial medical evidence indicates that unborn children feel pain at 20 weeks during an abortion. This is undoubtedly a major Pro-Life victory! http://nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/Current/PDF/AM/ER8229.pdf Commentary from National Right to Life is avaliable here: |
